Welcome back to Finishing Strong! I apologize for posting this late. We had to go out of town yesterday and I lost track of everything. I even misplaced my car keys – sadly, not the first time.
We traveled over two mountain passes to the city of Klamath Falls. We skirted the boundaries of Crater National Park along the way. The fall colors made the journey very enjoyable.
Finishing Strong is hosted by me here at EvaVarga along with my friends – Heather from Blog She Wrote, Megan and Susan from Education Possible, and Heidi from Starts at Eight. The weekly link-up is dedicated to families homeschooling middle & high school kids. Each Wednesday, moms just like you share their best tips, encouragement, advice, and more for teaching older kids at home.
Ready to jump right in? Me too …
The holidays are right around the corner. Many are decorating for autumn with gourds and scarecrows. In our home, as the leaves begin to drop from the broadleaved trees, we pull out our pastry board and rolling pin, don our aprons, and begin to make our favorite holiday treat, lease. My top choices were:
My kids are both very active in Scouts (my oldest just began Venturing and my youngest is in Boy Scouts). The merit badge system and many of the awards are perfect starting points for high school electives and even core courses. I’ll be sharing more details in the coming months. Until then, I encourage you to check out Cheryl’s post, Using 4H for High School Course Content at Celebrate Simple.
Since my kiddos were little, we have loved picture books. I have used them for years in the public school classroom, referring to them as everybody books. The short stories and beautiful illustrations provide many segues to other lessons. For example, consider Using Picture Books to Teach Voice in Writing as described by Cindy at Our Journey Westward.
My daughter loves art and is pursuing high school elective credit in this area. I’m thereby always on the lookout for quality lessons such as High School Homeschool Art Curriculum: Drawing Eyes by Crystal at Inspire My Artist.
As always, thank you for helping us to make Finishing Strong a key resource for families who are homeschooling through the middle & high school years.
Have you entered the giveaway? There are still a few days yet before the contest closes.
