Online Courses for Kids

To alleviate the stress of teaching science, I have put together several science units that I will be sharing with you through online courses or workshops.  Each course is self-paced and participants work through the lessons and activities when it is convenient for them. The course is open to all ages but the content is geared towards middle level students – parents and families are welcome to join in on the fun.

An Introduction to Entomology

Offered: Ongoing on Outschool

I have designed this online science course so students will develop an appreciation for the diversity of insects in their local area as well as an understanding of the greater diversity the world over.  Participants will have the opportunity to use an identification or dichotomous key.  Any prior knowledge about insects is appreciated but not required. The six week class meets once a week for a full hour. The lessons are also available as an eBook, Introductory Entomology.

Expect a very prepared, very thought out lesson plan that focuses on many subjects related to insects.

Junior Naturalists

Offered: Ongoing on Outschool

A nature journal is a place to record your encounters with the natural world — from the everyday to the sublime. Field sketches, regardless of the degree of artistic talent with which they are rendered, force us to look closely and observe nature as it really is. Simply put, nature journaling is the regular recording of observations, perceptions, and feelings about the natural world around you.

Nature Journaling for Ages 8-13 is designed as an ongoing class whereupon students will be guided each class period to explore a nature topic in the outdoors and guided to record their observations in a nature journal. Classes meet twice each week for 40 minutes.

Exploring Ecology

Offered: Ongoing on Outschool

In this course, students will explore the ecology of their local area as we also learn about ecosystems and biomes on a grander scale. Students will learn about ecology by getting outdoors, collecting data, and experiencing the physical factors that influence the animal and plant communities first hand. The lessons are also available as an eBook, Ecology Explorations.
